Jones of Oswestry Lintel Problems

Update

Eventually on the Thursday 22 July 2010 they collected the two defective lintels. They fixed the lintels and these were back on Friday 30th July 2010. They seem fine and we are pleased with how quickly they sorted the problem out, once we had persuaded them of the problems.

It is just a shame that problems like this reach site in the first place. A use of a plumb and a tape measure before the original delivery would have highlighted the problems before they left the factory.

Problems

Jones of Oswestry supplied the lintels including the three top-hat lintels for the three gables. We have had a number of problems with these lintels and a poor response from Jones of Oswestry in resolving these issues. We initially found some problems with the straight lintels supplied. A couple of problems were down to us and they accepted that some of the others were down to them. However on one lintel which was insufficient for the load, they argued it was our fault and we have ended up paying for it. It appears they do not take responsibility for load calculations - in fact in this case it looks like they just supplied a lintel based on the information provided without doing any load calculations.

We have recently raised issues with them to do with the specialised top-hat lintels. Their initial reply to us totally ignored the issues we raised and focused on the delay in telling them. That delay was purely due to us not having raised the lintels into place as all the lintels were provided in one delivery at the start of the job. It has taken us a few months to reach the point .

The problems with top-hat lintels include being out of plumb by up to 50mm. One rectangular section of the lintel leg is 7mm out on one side compared to the other for a section that is approximately 350mm long. This shows a lack of checking in the factory and no quality control when the lintels are checked prior to shipment.

It's bad enough to have the problems but they have been both dismissive and cavalier about the issues we have raised including making comments like "can't you twist it back".
