Trying to arrange services from Anglian Water, EDF Energy and BT (OpenReach) is something of a nightmare.

Telephone Line Connection

You speak to BT about a what infrastructure you need to install and they say "place an order". After explaining that's a little premature they will then speak to OpenReach but not give you a phone no. However you are still no further forward as the reply you then get is pretty useless, in fact, you'll be no closer to getting anything done from the first time you picked up your phones. After calling BT Head Office on 020 7356 5000 I got a phone number for OpenReach New Sites after again being told that they are not a Customer-facing division of BT!

To call OpenReach New Sites call 0800 616866.

To find the relevant information on the OpenReach website you need to go to "Our Networks" then "Developing Our Network" where there is lots of information for builders and also phone numbers and other contact details for each region.

Click here for details on how to contact your local New Sites Regional Office

Click here for the BT OpenReach Builder's Guide grabbed from their website on 27 April 2009.

So, OpenReach have various contact details to allow developers to arrange adding a new development to the BT OpenReach-managed network. Isn't that Customer-facing?

Applied 27-4-2009

Electricity Connection

To be added.

Applied 23-4-2009. Also requested cable run information from EDF at same time.

Mains Water Connections

Applied to Anglian Water for mains water connection 27-4-2009.

Survey performed on 14-5-2009. The run to the site is approximately 90m so the plan is to use a 32mm connection to the mains supply. It will go through the archway and keep close to the southern archway wall. The water meter will be placed on the southern corner of the archway. This then means that Anglian Water will have to connect from meter to the mains supply which is less than two meters so this is covered as part of the connection fee.

The connection pipe is to 750mm underground. Three 'peepholes' to be provided rather than leave trench open so that Anglian Water can inspect pipe is at the correct depth. Peepholes to be just through archway at bend and at entry to site. Leave 2m of pipework where connection to meter is to be provided.

We think that the road will not need to be closed but this will be the supervisor's decision.

Foul Water Connections

Applied to Anglian Water for foul water connection 27-4-2009. Cost £206 + VAT for vetting & admin fee.

I have been notified that are proposal is fine. It will be inspected once completed.
